As of the 2000 census, the county has a total area of 1,266.22 square miles of which 1,050.91 square miles (or 83.00%) is land and 215.31 square miles (or 17.00%) is water so there are many area lakes for fishing and water sports. There is approximately 158.27 miles of shoreline on Tampa Bay. The modern boundaries of the county place it approximately midway along the west coast of Florida.
A narrow strip of Hillsborough County extends to the west to the Gulf of Mexico along the Tampa Port Shipping Channel. This keeps Hillsborough County from being landlocked. The central portion of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge is in Hillsborough County as is Egmont Key at the entrance to Tampa Bay.
